Jocelyn Is 9 months!

This girl. I think I fall more in love with her every day.

At her 9 month check up she weighed in at 15.1 pounds - 6th percentile -Woo- hoo! She jumped way up on her growth curve. Probably because she LOVES baby food now. She's starting to army crawl a little and occasionally pushes up into a crawling position. But most of the time she's still content to roll around on the floor or sit up and play. She takes two naps a day, but handles missing a nap really well if we are on the go. She still wakes to nurse at night and Mama's ok with that for now ;)

Jocelyn is 8 Months!

This month she started sitting up on her own (finally!) and got her two bottom teeth in. She really enjoys swinging at the park and coos whenever Mona (our cat) comes near.  She lights up when Dada comes around, but doesn't like it when I leave her with him. I've tried a couple of times to leave her in the care of another and it always ends in crying hysterics and me giving up. So for now I'll just hang onto her. ;)

Check out these faces!

Bath time sweetheart . . .

She likes to sleep swaddled on her tummy with one or both legs through the crib.

Early morning run in their jammies!

Her hair is getting longer, blonder, and fluffier. And her eyes seem to be turning brown.

Jocelyn Is 7 Months!

On July 28 Jocelyn Marie turned 7 months old. She's not sitting up completely on her own yet, but still loves to roll all over the floor. She's eating solids fairly well. Her favorites right now are sweet potatoes and carrots, so I'm a bit nervous she's going to turn orange! She is occasionally sleeping through the night, but not very consistently. Very much a Mama's girl these days, although Dada gives it his best shot! We are enjoying this little munchkin and are so very thankful for her.

Jocelyn Is 6 Months!

. . . or at least she turned 6 months about two and a half weeks ago. We've been very busy, moving from Albert Lea to Eagan, MN, only to hop on a plane four days later and visit family and friends in Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. A whirlwind trip but wonderful!

These days Jocelyn is rolling all over the place and acting ready to crawl although I'm fairly sure that's a ways off. She's doing a little cereal twice a day and suddenly HATES to sleep at night. We're working on that. She is a happy girl, such a joy! She makes friends everywhere she goes.

Jocelyn Is 3 Months!

Today our little Jocelyn Marie turns 3 months old! She is 9 lbs. 12 oz - quite the little peanut! She is doing well though and is a sweet, happy girl most of the time. She still loves to 'talk' and has seemed more entertained by Sam recently, starting to 'talk' to him. She is just starting to discover her hands, reach for things, and occasionally gets her hands into her mouth.

I wanted to show off this beautiful gift Jocelyn received from her Auntie LaLa (Lauren Molina :) ). I just love all of the fabrics and pattern she chose. It doesn't show up well on a picture, but there is a verse stitched across it, complete with swirly hearts and flowers.

"You make known to me the path of life.
In your presence there is fullness of joy,
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."
(Psalm 16:11)

What a beautiful verse to wrap Jocelyn in!
May she know fullness of joy!!!

Ch-Ch-Changes

Before I discuss the upcoming changes, let me start with a little catch up for those of you who don't know what the Robbins have been up to in the last year (or five).

We moved from Chattanooga to Minneapolis in 2010 for Chris to complete a four year MDiv program at Bethlehem Seminary. As we neared the end of his program it became increasingly clear to Chris that his desire was not to be in vocational ministry. It was, however, on our hearts to partner in ministry with one of his classmates and hopefully be of some help to them, their family, and ministry. Our friend Dave had been preaching regularly at Sojourners Church, an hour and a half south of the Cities in Albert Lea, MN. Dave more or less 'recruited' us to come and support him and be a part of Sojourners. When God provided a job close by, we joyfully moved in February 2014.

It's been a year of ups and downs. (As most years are.) We transitioned. We experienced owning our first home. We watched Sam grow from a baby to a toddler and Jocelyn was born. Chris has done very well in his job, but the rigor and pace of the job is not sustainable. He's been working 10-12 hour days, with some weekend work meaning 12 day stretches. On his feet, moving, no breaks, lots of stress. As you may have guessed, this leaves little work-life balance. Not much energy left for family, not to mention the vision of preaching or potentially becoming an elder. It's become clear that a better work-life balance is not in Chris' future if he stays with his current job.

So, after a really long year and much deliberation, Chris has decided to take a job that will move us back to the Cities. Specifically the job is in South St. Paul. It seems to be a great situation with a much better balance. We do own our home in Albert Lea, so the amount of time it will take to sell seems like the biggest wild card in the future. For now we will stay put and Chris will commute. We're not sure how long this scenario will work, but it's where we're starting.

We are so thankful for those in Albert Lea and at Sojourners who have embraced our family. We are sad in so many ways to be moving on from the vision of partnering with our friends at Sojourners. We are thankful for your prayers as we are hopeful that this change is God's answer to prayers for the chance to focus on our children and marriage and be involved in the local church.

Sam is TWO!

On March 5, 2015 Sam turned two years old!

                                                             Samuel Anthony Robbins
(A.K.A. Sam Bear, Booger, Little Buddy)

Loves his Dada, Mama, and Jock-a-nyn (Jocelyn). Lover of all things train and any activity involving running! Enjoys reading books, building block towers, painting and playing play dough. Loves to hold hands and pray before meals. Sam gives the sweetest hugs and kisses, especially first thing in the morning and after naps. Does not like to sleep late in the mornings, have his diaper changed, or be still for pictures. Sam is a strong-willed little boy who we pray will grow into a strong man of God. We love this little guy!

Jocelyn Is Two Months!

Jocelyn is two months old today! I adore this little girl. She loves to 'talk' and smile and likes being in her bouncy seat when she's awake. She tolerates big brother and his shenanigans. Jocelyn continues to be a good sleeper and takes naps at home swaddled in her basinet. She survived her first cold and is the only one in the household not to have gotten the stomach flu this month. She's had some more testing done and is on some medication now to help with her airway issues, which, it's hard to tell, but I think are improving slowly but surely. As Chris calls her, she's the 'healthiest sick baby ever.' So many appointments, so few actual issues. Also, she's had enough with this Minnesota winter and is ready to explore the outdoors. (Ok, maybe that's her Mama, but I'm sure she feels it too!)

One Month

Jocelyn's first month of life consisted mainly of sleeping, eating, and doctor's appointments. Thankfully so many of her health concerns have checked out to be total non-issues at this point, and it seems that the doctor's visits will become less frequent. Weight gain was one concern, and at her one month check up she was 7 lbs, 14 oz, at the 12th percentile. She is a tiny little squirt, but we're seeing consistent growth now -- a huge answer to prayer.

So far Jocelyn is a calm and gentle little girl. So, so sweet. She is starting to follow toys with her eyes, and she focuses on faces a little. There are hints of a smile starting that melt my heart. I can usually swaddle her and sing her to sleep in about 30 seconds. She sleeps really well at night, usually waking twice and sometimes only once. Her current list of nicknames includes: Joss, Baby J, Little Baby J, Little Missy, and Nap Buddy. (That last one is for the evenings when Chris snuggles her to sleep while I am caring for The Toddler.)

Welcome to This Crazy, Wonderful Life, Jocelyn

December 23 . . . the due date of our second child. We watched the day come and go like any other day – Chris went to work, and Sam and I did our thing.  December 25 . . . “Please don’t go into labor, please don’t go into labor,” I told myself. For one, I’d feel bad for the poor kid having to share a birthday with Jesus; and my mom wasn’t in town yet to take Sam while we were at the hospital. The three of us had a calm, sweet Christmas Day together. December 26, Momma Jo (my mother) arrived to ‘the cold north’ as she always puts it. Now we were ready to have a baby! December 27, Chris and I celebrated our 7th anniversary one day early and went to dinner at the nicest restaurant in town.

On Sunday morning, December 28, I slept in until seven in the morning. When I woke up, I was feeling some contractions, which had been a common occurrence in the last few weeks of pregnancy. But this felt a little different, and as the morning progressed they became more regular. We planned for my mom to take Sam to church and Chris went for a short run. Halfway through his run, I texted him that contractions had pretty much stopped, so he should run as far as he wants. No rush now, I thought. But I was ready to have this baby! So I got on our treadmill to see if I could help things progress. After about 15 minutes of walking, the contractions came back strong and regular – 20 second contractions about three minutes apart. I quickly called Chris and told him to get back home. After another hour and a half of laboring at home, we headed to the hospital around noon.
About 15 minutes before she was born.

This labor closely mirrored my first with Sam, and although it was crazy hard, I was able to do it without any medication or interventions. After about six hours of labor, at 4:48pm, with one giant push, our baby girl entered the world!  Chris showed more enthusiasm than I did; he kept saying, “It’s a girl!” I just kept saying things like, “That was so hard. That was awful. I never want to do it again.” For whatever reason it took me longer to get over the trauma of childbirth and enjoy my baby this time.

7 lbs., 11 oz. of sweetness
Right away things checked out well – her APGAR score was good and she nursed off and on for an hour or so.  Chris and I enjoyed our first hours with this sweet baby girl and discussed our name options. (We didn’t know the gender before birth and hadn’t settled on specific boy or girl names.) This whole time I found it very strange that no pediatrician came to examine her after birth.  Then she had a strange vomiting episode – it was a brownish color. And the nurses observed that her breathing was a bit more noisy and labored than they would like to see, so they called the on-call pediatrician around 12:30am.

After some observation and x-rays, and pulling a vial of brown fluid out of her stomach, the doctors decided to transfer her to the NICU at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. At first we thought this would be an ambulance ride, but later learned they were taking her by helicopter and neither of us could go with her. Although the idea of your newborn being air-lifted to a NICU sounds terrifying, those caring for her explained it as precautionary, knowing that her symptoms could not be diagnosed or treated here at our Albert Lea facility. The only point where I really broke down was seeing her lying there, hooked up to a lot of monitors and an IV and ready for transport. Before they took her away, we decided we had to settle on a name, so Jocelyn Marie it was.  Jocelyn, simply because we like it; it means ‘playful’ and we think it sounds like a fun little girl. Her middle name ‘Marie’ is in honor of my grandmother, Lois Marie.

So about twelve hours after birth, Jocelyn took her first helicopter ride and I, thankfully, was discharged so we could be with our daughter. Chris and I stopped by the house to pick up a few things and explain the situation to my mom. Then we drove an hour to Rochester and were reunited with Jocelyn. We were very pleased with both the care Jocelyn received and our interactions with the staff at St. Mary’s/Mayo Clinic. They were a calming presence in a somewhat scary situation.

Many people have asked, “Weren’t you just freaking out when all of this happened?” The answer is, no, I wasn’t. It may have been a strange combination of sleep deprivation and confusion over what was even wrong with her, and Chris’ calm nature in any crisis situation. But really, I can tell you that I know God put peace in my heart and the faith to trust him with each and every hour that passed. I kept singing to myself, “I need Thee every hour . . .” and He was so very near to us and gave me the emotional self-control I needed.

Jocelyn was in the NICU for four days.  Over time we were able to understand what had caused some of the concern following her birth. She had likely swallowed amniotic fluid, which meant she needed to be given antibiotics through an IV as a precaution. Thankfully she never developed any infection. She has a ‘floppy airway’ which leads to very noisy breathing – something that clears up on its own as she grows. She also broke her collarbone at birth, which needed no treatment, just caution as we do things like feed her and get her dressed. We were surrounded by so many very sick babies in the NICU; our sweet girl’s health concerns seemed to pale in comparison to others. Our total stay was close to four days, but there were babies who were there for weeks and some months. While we were exhausted, those four days were actually some of the most concentrated time Chris and I have spent together in many months.
Dinner date at the hospital cafeteria!

Going home!

On New Year’s Day we brought Jocelyn home.  I’ll never forget the hug that Sam gave me after being away nearly five days. He was immediately interested in his new baby sister. He is super sweet with her, but is also a toddler going through an adjustment phase. Having two babies under two is not for the faint of heart! I’m forever grateful to my mother for being here for us and to my mother-in-law for coming as soon as my mom had to leave. They have both loved and served us selflessly as we find our new normal as a family of four. We praise and thank the Maker for Jocelyn’s health and the joy of welcoming this darling girl into our lives. We love you, Jocelyn Marie, and can’t wait to watch you grow.
